PGA WEST Golf Information

Three PGA West courses are open to the public: the Stadium, Nicklaus Tournament and Norman courses. Three courses are private: the Palmer, Nicklaus Private and Weiskopf. The six sets of tees on each course offer golfers of all abilities a chance to test their games against the best that golf has to offer.

All six courses are managed and maintained by The Club at PGA West, a privately owned non-equity membership club. Owning a home at PGA West does not include club membership or access to the three private courses. (Click here for golf course and membership information for The Club at PGA West.)

Short-Term Rentals

PGA WEST adheres to the City of La Quinta guidelines and ordinances related  to Short Term Rentals. Anyone planning to rent their unit, either long or short term, must adhere to existing rental rules of the City of La Quinta and the PGA West Master Association. This includes payment of registration permit fees to the City and the PGA West Master Association for the first year and again for subsequent years.  For further information, see laquintaca.gov and pgawestma.com/rental-properties/

Fun Facts

Living in Res 1 brings you closer to nature than you ever thought possible. Peninsular Bighorn Sheep living in the adjacent Santa Rosa Mountains are frequent visitors to Res I. They wander our streets, driveways, lawns and golf courses looking for food (what humans call shrubs and flowers) and water (what humans call lakes). You may look but not touch or harass the sheep…they are wild critters and a protected species. The California Fish & Wildlife Dept. estimates the La Quinta herd at about 120.

If you’ve ever wondered how far the sheep travel from their mountain homes to reach the Palmer homes where people live, the rugged mountains bordering the west side of the Palmer residences range in height from about 1,410 ft. directly west of Avenue 54, about 465 ft. directly west of the Arnold Palmer/Riviera intersection, and about 745 ft. west of where Tanglewood and Riviera intersect.

At the other end of the measuring tape, the City of La Quinta’s website says the city is 56 ft. above sea level. But that number in parts of the city, including Res 1 HOA, drops down into single digits depending on where you’re standing. As a Res 1 owner you might find your living room just 4 ft above sea level…or 4 ft. below. It all has to do with an ancient lake that covered this area millions of years ago before sinking…and that’s a whole other story.
Res 1 can lay claim to two of professional golf’s most memorable feats. Tour pro David Duval shot 59 on the Palmer course in the 1999 Desert Classic, only the third tour player to do so up to that time. And at the Stadium Course, Lee Trevino won $175,000 with a dramatic hole-in-one on the 17th hole’s celebrated island green in the 1987 Skins Game. The shot was witnessed by playing partners Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Fuzzy Zoeller and a nationwide TV audience of millions.
The first settlers on land that today is PGA WEST were the Cahuilla Indians, who have lived across the arid Coachella Valley landscape for centuries. Fast-forward through time to the arrival of non-indigenous settlers, all the way to the mid-1950s. That’s when Leon and Mark Kennedy founded Kennedy Brothers Ranch, a 2,000+ acre spread that today includes the footprint of PGA WEST. The restaurant in the private clubhouse is named Kennedy’s in honor of the family.
200,000 is a lot of anything. At Res 1, that’s how many sprinkler heads were repaired last year by our hard-working in-house landscape crew. They also used 36,000 lbs. of rye grass seed, 50 tons of fertilizer and planted 14,000 flats of flowers. Staying just as busy were our maintenance workers – they painted 277 homes, installed 1,346 new house number plaques, repaired 148 gates, resurfaced 5 pool decks, re-plastered 2 pools and 1 spa, among many more responsibilities.
